A loving couple enjoying Grandparents Day

While not every retired couple are grandparents, you probably know some who are. Since today is National Grandparents Day, I would like to take this time to celebrate that special occasion.

The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.                    In 2012, Grandparents Day falls on Sept. 9th

Some things to think about if you’re a grandparent or to share with a favorite grandparent.

Our grandchildren accept us for ourselves, without rebuke or effort to change us, as no one in our entire lives has ever done, not our parents, siblings, spouses, friends – and hardly ever our own grown children.  ~Ruth Goode  http://www.quotegarden.com/grandparents.html

A child needs a grandparent, anybody’s grandparent, to grow a little more securely into an unfamiliar world.  ~Charles and Ann Morse     http://www.quotegarden.com/grandparents.html

The simplest toy, one which even the youngest child can operate, is called a grandparent.  ~Sam Levenson, You Don’t Have to Be in “Who’s Who” to Know What’s What                                                                                                     http://www.quotegarden.com/gp-day.html

If nothing is going well, call your grandmother.  ~Italian Proverb.                http://www.quotegarden.com/gp-day.html

Do you know why grandchildren are always so full of energy?  They suck it out of their grandparents.  ~Gene Perret                          http://www.quotegarden.com/gp-day.html

Being grandparents sufficiently removes us from the responsibilities so that we can be friends. Allan Frome           http://quotations.about.com/od/holidaysandspecialdays1/a/grandparents1.htm

Grandparents bestow upon their grandchildren
The strength and wisdom that time
And experience have given them.

Grandchildren bless their Grandparents
With a youthful vitality and innocence
That help them stay young at heart forever.

Together they create a chain of love
Linking the past with the future.
The chain may lengthen,
But it will never part…

Enjoy this day, and consider calling a grandparent who would love to hear from you.
