Won’t you be my Valentine? Remember when we were young and hoped to get a bundle of penny Valentine cards at the class party? For some it was an exciting day. For others, it was a day to stay home and hide under the pillows. Now that we’re gown and have many life experiences, we see there are more critical things than Valentine Cards. However, the day can still be equally as important in our relationships.
Who is your Valentine, and how do you plan to spend the day? I don’t imagine you’ll be cutting out paper cards. Nevertheless, Valentine’s Day is a good time to think about our relationships. How will you celebrate with your special someone? Why not take the initiative and create a memorable and unique day?
A clever card, an extra kind remark or thoughtful action can make all the difference in a relationship. Why, you might wonder, should you make such an effort. It just might be because when someone knows you care, life is better for both the recipient and the giver. It can make both of you feel more alive and joyous. Truthfully, the more we invest in others, the better we feel.
I’m sharing this thought because I recently heard some people complain about hum-drum days in retirement. It doesn’t have to be that way. True, each of us is responsible for our own happiness. However, when we take time to share joy with another—especially someone close to us in life—we all feel better. If you haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions, this may be the time to help yourself and your loved one come to experience joy. You can do it— all it takes is a desire to do so.
So I ask, what one action can you take to make yourself and your partner smile. The smile could lead to laughter and a renewed commitment to one another. That little bit of effort could pay off in large rewards and satisfaction.
