What Gets in the Way of Your Retirement Goals?

He suggests that to achieve our life’s goals, we let go of the bungee harness we wrap around ourselves. Interesting concept, but how does that relate to retirees and retirement goals?
I don’t know about you, but I long ago gave up the possibility of bungee jumping, The thought of juggling my teeth and breaking all those fillings makes me nervous. Nevertheless, Schram’s comment presents some truths about the kinds of restrictions we retirees may place on our lives.
Often I hear statements like…’I’m just so busy that I don’t know where the days go,” or “I’d like to learn to play the piano (or paint), but I don’t know where to begin,” or “I’d like to go to the beach, but the sun is so strong,” or go White Water Rafting or learn to sail, but these creaky bones don’t want to cooperate,” or “write a book, but I don’t know what to write about,”…and so on. We all have our dreams and our excuses.
How Can You Shred the Knots That Bind?
Bungee Jumping never was one of my retirement goals. My heart races every time I see a picture of One. Many people say it’s perfectly safe because the cord attached to the harness can be adjusted to minimize the amount of bouncing. Despite that assurance, it feels like too big of a dose of adrenaline for me. Still, the Bungee harness is a great example of how we can wrap ourselves in a protective garment and miss out on marvelous opportunities.
What would you like to do now that you have the opportunity? Honestly, you will have the time when you allow yourself to do what really matters to you. What harness is keeping you from acting on your dream and how will you stop the self-talk that keeps telling you, “no”? This is your chance. Taking advantage of this life-stage to create special memories will make you a healthier, happier and more interesting person. Make the freedom to do something that is important to you a gift to yourself. You’ll be glad you did.
